The optics design, heat sink construction, driver design and specification, and IP-rated housing are all radically different between a residential LED bulb and a commercial LED flood light fixture. Factors such as mounting heights, the area to be illuminated, the levels of illuminance required, and overall beam angle should be considered when selecting a wattage level. As a rough guideline, 50 W is suitable for small facade or garden lighting (placing at 3-5m, covering 80m2); 100 W is suitable for standard commercial parking lots and security lighting (8-10m mounting height, 250 m2 per fitting); 200 W is suitable for heavier commercial lighting and loading terminals (10-14 m mounting heights, covering about 500 m2 per fitting); 400 W works well for intense commercial lighting and stadium perimeter lighting (15-20 m mounting height); 1000 W is effective in large stadium flood and industrial high-mast lighting (up to 40 m). Apart from the absolute minimum initial set-up cost (reading time) the only candidate for better-value is cheap metal halide where darkness is driven by fixture price rather than operational cost &#8211; fortunately (or unfortunately) this is getting more and more unusual. Heat loads are managed by the fixture thermal design, i.e the the die-cast body with integral the fin-array heat sink. We specify PCB junction temperatures for our fixtures below 75C, which has a dual purpose for us &#8211; lumen depreciation and drivers. The thermal problem is solved by dissipating the heat from the back of the fitting, directly into the ambient air. (Contrasted with gas discharge fixtures where the heat is directed forward).
