What Are Outdoor LED Flood Lights?
An outdoor LED flood light is a high-intensity, wide-beam light fixture that uses light-emitting diode (LED) technology to deliver broad, uniform illumination across large exterior areas. Unlike a spotlight — which concentrates a narrow beam on a single point — LED floodlights spread light across a wide angle, standard 90°–120°, covering large surfaces uniformly. This makes them the go-to choice for exterior lighting of perimeters, parking lots, building facades, and open-air venues. Their high brightness output makes them equally suited to area lighting of sports fields, landscape lighting, and any large-area floodlighting application.
These light fixtures convert electrical power into light through semiconductor electroluminescence, achieving efficiencies of 120–150 lm/W — 3 to 5 times more efficient than the metal halide, high-pressure sodium, and high-intensity discharge (HID) sources they replace. This fundamental energy efficiency advantage, combined with a 50,000-hour rated lifespan per IEC 62717, makes waterproof LED flood lights the benchmark for modern commercial outdoor lighting. Compared to traditional HID sources, LED technology delivers superior lumen maintenance and contains no mercury — making them environmentally friendly for street lights, area lights, and large-area exterior illumination.
At Guangqi Lighting, our in-house team designs and manufactures these outdoor LED flood lights — maintaining full control across mold development, optics engineering, thermal management, and smart driver design. This vertical integration allows us to deliver consistent lumen maintenance and precise color temperature control across our full 50W–1000W range.

LED Flood Light Wattage Guide: 50W to 1000W
Typically, the most common question that representatives of facilities and contractors ask us is about the wattage required in their situation. There are three primary aspects – the size of the space, the mounting height and the illumination level (foot-candles or lux). Use the following table to help choose a suitable LED fixture for your needs.
50 Watts
— 6,500 lm
100 Watts
— 13,000 lm
200 Watts
— 26,000 lm
400 Watts
— 52,000 lm
1000 Watts
— 130,000 lmPractical Rule of Thumb:
In parking lot floodlighting, IES RP-20 proposes a maintained horizontal level of 1 to 3 foot-candles (10-33 lux) for open parking areas and 3 to 5 foot-candles for covered/enclosed parking facilities. For the typical 8-10 m mounting heights with 100W (13,000 lm) floodlights, the illumination pattern covers 200 m at 2 fc. This provides a useful point to begin a photometric analysis. It is typical among most contractors that working one wattage level higher than their first assessment compensates for the real-world derating factors of heat and fixture age. [INDUSTRY-STD: IES RP-20-14, Recommended Practice for Parking Facilities Lighting]
LED Flood Light Applications: Parking Lots, Stadiums & Perimeter Security
Commercial and industrial outdoor LED flood lights are central to exterior illumination in every field of use. Each application carries distinct illuminance requirements, mounting constraints, and environmental exposure conditions.
Parking Lot Lighting
LED lights for parking lots must deliver uniform illumination across large, open areas to aid motorists in wayfinding and ensure pedestrian safety. Per IES RP-20, maintained illuminance for open surface lots is 1–3 fc (10–32 lux). A 100W area light with a 130° beam angle, mounted at 8–10 m, typically covers one standard parking bay row. Dusk to dawn photodetector control reduces daily operating hours, improving visibility and safety while extending fixture lifespan.
Perimeter Security Lighting
Outdoor security flood lights serve a dual purpose: deterrence and detection. Well-illuminated perimeters consistently reduce opportunistic incidents by improving camera visibility and eliminating shadow zones. A CCT of 5000K–6500K is recommended for security applications — cooler light improves contrast for CCTV capture and is more alerting for security personnel during night shifts.
Stadium & Sports Field Lighting
Stadium lights demand extreme precision: uniform light distribution (U1 ≥ 0.5 per EN 12193), minimal glare (GR ≤ 50), and high CRI (≥ 80, preferably ≥ 90 for HDTV broadcast). At 20–40 m mounting heights, 400W–1000W fixtures are standard. Multiple fixtures per pole create the overlapping beam patterns required to eliminate shadow zones on the playing surface.
Warehouse & Industrial Exterior
Loading docks and warehouse perimeters require rugged fixtures that withstand high-pressure hose-down cleaning, chemical exposure, and continuous operation. IP66 is the standard specification here. Die-cast aluminium housings with corrosion-resistant finishes and sealed optical chambers are essential. We address potential failure points with double-sealed gland fittings on all IP66 models.
Building Facade & Architectural
Facade illumination requires adjustable beam angles and precise aiming achieved through yoke or knuckle mount systems. Warmer CCTs (3000K–4000K) are typically specified for hospitality; cooler 5000K is preferred for corporate facades. RGB and tunable white options are available for special event illumination, aiming upward from ground level or downward from parapets.
Ports, Airports & Infrastructure
Marine port applications pose the greatest outdoor environment adversities: salt atmosphere, high vibration, and corrosion. Use of stainless steel hardware and marine-grade aluminium housing is required. For aviation safety, obstructions must follow FAA circulars. Our Guangqi series is ideal for extreme ambient temperatures (up to 45°C) in infrastructure projects.
Technical Specifications of Commercial Outdoor LED Flood Lights
Commercial LED flood lights need careful specification for flood lighting to be effective: too little output and the space is unsafe or non-compliant; too much and the result is over-lit and wasteful. The table below summarizes our standard commercial & industrial LED flood light range, covering durability ratings, lumen output, and IP classification across all wattages.

Outdoor LED Security Light Quality Certifications & Compliance Standards
For commercial & industrial LED flood light purchase, certification is not simply a nice-to-have – it is your legal proof that the fixture conforms to the specified performance levels, and is safe for use in your territory. Guangqi Lighting now have the following standards conformance on our outdoor flood light range:
CE Mark
Mandatory for sale in the European Economic Area. Confirms compliance with EU directives including EN 60598-1 (luminaires), EN 61000 (EMC), and EN 62471 (photobiological safety). All Guangqi Lighting outdoor flood lights carry the CE mark.
RoHS Compliant
Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive (2011/65/EU). Confirms absence of mercury, lead, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, and other restricted substances. Our LED fixtures contain zero mercury — unlike the metal halide, HPS, and incandescent light bulb technologies they replace — making them the environmentally responsible electric light source for wall-mounted, pole-mounted, and structural installations.
IP65 — Weatherproof
Per IEC 60529. Provides complete protection against solid particles (dust-tight) and protection against low-pressure water jets from any direction. Waterproofing at IP65 level is suitable for all standard outdoor environments, including rain, snow, and car wash proximity — ensuring the fixture’s electrical components remain sealed.
IP66 — Heavy-Duty Waterproof
Per IEC 60529. Adds protection against high-pressure water jets. Required for port areas, marine environments, loading docks, industrial facilities with wash-down procedures, and any application where the fixture may be directly hosed down.
Color Rendering Index
A CRI of ≥ 80 ensures that colors under the flood light appear natural and accurate — critical for security (accurate color rendering for CCTV), retail facades, and sports venues where player/ball visibility matters. Our standard range achieves CRI ≥ 80; CRI ≥ 90 available on request.
LED Module Lifespan
International standard governing LED module performance requirements and lifespan measurement methodology. Our 50,000-hour L70 lifespan claim is tested and reported per the LM-80 testing protocol, with TM-21 projection methodology applied for lifespan extrapolation.
Note for North American Procurement:
DLC (DesignLights Consortium) certification and UL listing is available on select models for users and distributors operating in US & Canada. Please specify when ordering. All Guangqi Lighting standard product line is CE-certified to meet ever-growing international and non-UL markets, while DLC certification may be issued on qualifying models on special request.
LED Flood Lights vs. Metal Halide: Energy Savings & ROI
The first question a facilities manager should be asking when choosing LED flood light upgrades is not “what is the up-front cost?” but “what is the ROI?” Modern LED technology delivers ROI to your balance sheet within 12-36 months in the form of greatly reduced energy, maintenance, and replacement costs. People and business processes also benefit from LED flood lights: high performance lighting is more environmentally and emotionally friendly, with no mercury, lower emissions, and less waste. Compared with old-fashioned metal halide lights, energy-efficient LED flood lights will save your business 60-80% on its electricity supply.

The 100W LED (13,000 lm) replaces a 400W metal halide that would produce the same accessible illumination at the specified surface – the LED’s greater lumen maintenance and more efficient predictability reduces the energy wasted in the light emitted in undirected directions with HID fixtures.
Based on [industry-STD] IEC 62717 life-span data and [Qualified] industry-average energy cost. Actual savings will vary depending on the site and usage patterns.
Common Mistake We See
Many purchasing decision-makers compare the wattage of LED fixtures to that of metal halide fixtures – this results in an erroneous calculation that implies a 400W LED improves on the metal halide equivalenant. No. The comparison should be in lumen generation: a 100W LED at 13,000 lm replaces a 400W metal halide at, at best, some 13,600 (74%) usable lumens. Demand your LED supplier supply you with photometric files (IES files) for both fixtures so that you can specify by on-surface (ie task) illuminance.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
The main disadvantages are higher initial fixture cost versus a halogen or HPS fixture and heat output at the driver level (drivers shall not be enclosed in non-ventilated locations.) But in commercial use with 50,000 hours of life time and saving 60-80% energy, most to all of the job will amortize the premium in 18–36 months. The impression of a high upfront cost means is largely based on comparing the list price of LED fixtures to the fixture price of a metal halide fixture without adding in cost for the ballast of the metal halide as well as the relamping labor and disposal costs over the life of the fixture. (50,000 hours equates to fully amortizing the premium resulting in a lower LED price of about $10–15 per fixture.)
