Outdoor Spotlights Product Series

Z-GQ outdoor spot lights are available in five different product series designed to fit the specialized requirements of professional landscape, architectural, and commercial light projects. All fixtures use high output LED emitters with beam angles as narrow as 3 degrees and as wide as 120 degrees, for directable and flexible area or acccent illumination from a single shrub up to architectural facades. Our led outdoor spotlight fixtures are supplied to lighting designers, contractors, and project consultants throughout Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and North America.

What Is an Outdoor Spot Light?

An outdoor spot light is a small directional luminaire which concentrates its output into a tightly focused beam pattern of less than 45 degrees. Its optical strategy involves three steps: the LED chip acts as a high brightness point source, a precision manufactured reflector or lens assembly modifies the beam geometry to its specified angle, and a tempered glass enclosure offers weatherproof protection. This tight beam geometry, common to all led spot light fixtures, separates the luminaire from the floodlight variety which distributes a 60 degree or wider light pattern.

LED outdoor spotlight efficiency allows them to quickly displace halogen and metal halide halogen bulbs as lights of choice for professional illumination installations. Benefits are numerous: 80 percent reductions in power compared to comparably bright low voltage led halogen fixtures, a rated life of 50,000 hours that circumvents professional lamp maintenance, and instant full brightness at power-up without the warm-up time required of HID fixtures. Modern outdoor spotlights also provide highly refined color control, from warm 2700K to cool 6000K, plus RGB and RGBW custom color options and DMX512 digital addressability.

Materials & Weatherproofing

All Guangqi outdoor spotlights are made of die-cast aluminium for its high thermal conductivity and inherent corrosion resistance. Die-casting offers intricate heat-sink shapes with a large convective cooling area to keep junction temperatures below the 50,000 hour rated life of the LED chips. All aluminium housings are electrostatically powder coated – default architectural grey or black finishes, other colors may be specified, including high corrosion ‘marine grade’ for maritime / high humidity conditions.

Each optical window is made from tempered glass, transmittance 92% or greater, with high lumen transmission coupled with impact resistant to at IK08 rating. Silicone gaskets running between housing and lens generate a continuous weatherproofing barrier rated to IP65 according to the IEC 60529 standard. The first number ‘6’ classifies in relation to the IP numbering system; complete dust tight protection, no ingress of dust at all under negative pressure. The second number ‘5’ sets clear water jet expectations, tolerated at 12.5l/min from any direction throughout hours of every day. Hence our fixtures are suitable for very exposed areas receiving large volumes of rain, garden irrigation and high pressure cleaning.

LED Chip Options

We have a number of LED chip brands available so that we can meet the performance specifications while staying within the project budget. We evaluate lumen maintenance and color over the entire temperature range for each chip family.

CREE

140–160 lm/W

Maximum luminous efficacy among our models. Premium choice for projects where energy efficiency or maximum throw distance are the key specification drivers.

OSRAM

130–150 lm/W

Good performance in balance and excellent color rectification. The landscape light application is a very good and efficiency and identity.

PHILIPS Lumileds

135–155 lm/W

Long track record of proven reliable operation through extensive field experience. Commonly specified for municipal and infrastructure projects.

SAN’AN

100–120 lm/W

Cost-optimized domestic chip choice. Provides reliable performance for volume production where cost effectiveness is critically important.

Beam Angle Selection

Selecting the correct beam angle is essential to creating the desired lighting effect. A narrower beam packs a higher light output into a smaller projection onto the target, creating greater brightness; however, the coverage width will be more limited.

3°–5°

Long-throw facade lighting. Effective projection distance of 30 meters or more. Ideal for tall buildings and monuments.

15°–25°

Tree canopy uplighting, sculpture accent. Creates defined light pools with controlled spill for focused highlighting.

30°–60°

General landscape and signage lighting. The most versatile range for typical outdoor spot light installations.

90°–120°

Wide-area flood and wall wash. Overlaps with floodlight territory — broad, even coverage from a single fixture.

How to Choose the Right Outdoor Spotlight: A Buyer's Guide

The eight variables you should consider—and how to balance them against your needs—before selecting LED landscape spotlights. Getting it right at the specification phase is your best chance to save re-works and re-designs, when you are planning the project budget. Here are all the factors you might want to filter for a landscape lighting project.

01

Wattage & Lumen Output

Match wattage and throw length. 6W for < 5m. 36W+ for 15m+. Lumen output—not wattage alone—dictates brightness, useability. Well-focused wide-beams beat badly designed narrow-beams every time in the LED spectrum.

02

Beam Angle

Choose beam angle to balance depth and effect, mood and ambience. Narrow (3-12) for pop-out and drama. Mid (15-30) for wraps, general highlight. Wide (40-120) for wash and area-filling effects. Choose our simple-to-adjust GQ-SP029 to set in-situ- just the beam angle you need.

03

IP Rating

IP65. Top safety rating, top performance, top value. Limits ingress of dust and protect from water stream. Suitable for HDW, rain, irrigation, storms. Baffle if exposed to salt-spray. For direct salt-spray, specify IP66 and/or marine-grade paint coating.

04

Material & Build Quality

Aluminium diecast body with tempered glass screen. Die-cast aluminum is the standard fixture material for commercial outdoor spotlights, offering higher thermal efficiency—which directly increases the lifetime of your LED. Washdown resistant mounting hardware eliminates fixture failures: corrosion.

05

Color Temperature (CCT)

Warm white (2700K-3000K): offers welcoming ambience for hospitality, domestic and retail projects. Neutral white (4000K): balances façade, retail, branding and display schemes. Cold white (5000K-6000K): creates the impression of more lumens, so meeting security objectives. RGBW lighting for action and effect scenes in clubs, malls, stadiums.

06

CRI (Color Rendering Index)

Color rendering indicator, from 1-100. For document, poster, retail, art and branding schemes specify CRI 80+. For color from a branded façade or sign, specify 70+. For general scene-lighting use 70+; it’s a cheap production add-on for efficiency, not a transformer.

07

Control Options

This level of basic ON-OFF switching is appropriate for static scene lighting in domestic and retail schemes. Add additional dimmability, perhaps 0-10V or PWM, for additional scene-design flexibility without complexity. Choose digital DMX512 or RGBW control for show-adaption, scene scales, dramatic transistions.

08

Voltage: Low vs. Line Voltage

Low voltage (12V & 24V DC) safety when working in gardens. Easy changeability. Line voltage (120V & 220V AC) to avoid transformers, including longer cable runs, especially those exceeding one hundred meters in size (municipal, commercial).

Low Voltage vs. Line Voltage: Pros and Cons

Factor Low Voltage (12V/24V DC) Line Voltage (120V/220V AC)
Safety Safer — reduced shock risk Requires licensed electrician
Cable Runs Limited (voltage drop over distance) Long runs with minimal loss
Transformer Required (adds cost + failure point) Not required
Installation Ease DIY-friendly in many regions Professional install mandatory
Best For Residential gardens, small commercial Large-scale commercial, municipal
Common Fixture Types MR16-based, small spotlights Integrated LED, high-power fixtures

Engineer's Note

For commercial facade projects over 15 meters throw distance, skip anything under 72W. The 3-degree to 5-degree narrow beam on our SP027 series reaches 30+ meters cleanly. Pair that with a DMX512 driver and you get precise, programmable control over every fixture in the array.

Outdoor Spot Light FAQs

How many lumens do I need for outdoor spot light?

How many lumens you need depends on what you're lighting and how far you are from the object. A path marking stake, pillar or small sign needs only 100-200 lumens (similar to a candle). Additional landscape accents like trees and sculpture are best at 300-700 lumens to bring out detail. Large building sides and multi-faceted architectural features look best at 1,000+ lumens, with high power units reaching 20,000+ lumens to fill multi story areas.

Are LED spotlights better for outdoors?

Yes, LED spotlights will save nearly 80% of the power consumption of the same fixtures using halogen bulbs, and also last nearly ten times longer (up to 50,000 hours). They also produce no infrared or UV light, so plant foliage in an illuminated area will remain healthy and insect populations will not cluster around the fixtures.

What LED light is best for outdoors?

Color temperature selection varies with the application. For general landscape and garden illumination, 2700K to 3000K warm white produces a welcoming, natural color. For security and pathways, 4000K to 5000K neutral to cool white maximizes beam spread of the illumination. For special architectural and entertainment light, use switchable white or RGBW units that offer a clear selection or can programmatically change along the timeline.

How do I install outdoor spotlights?

Selecting low voltage 12V or 24V is the easiest solution in the outdoor environment - simply plug in a plug-and-play transformer and install yourself, while inherently remaining safer in wet soil areas. Line voltage 120v and 100-277V fixtures present a new challenge: a licensed electrician must install conduit rated for direct burial and adhere to all electrical codes. Whichever approach is chosen, connectors at each junction must be gel-filled, IP rated--with an appropriate gel filling-to prevent invasive moisture from entering permanently. Burial depth of low voltage outdoor illumination cable is generally 300 millimeters minimum, though certain localities may specify a greater depth. Wires running the course for over 30 meters may require widening to 14-gauge wire or placing an additional transformer tap to prevent a dimming effect of the the most remote fixture.

Are outdoor spotlights waterproof?

All properly rated outdoor spotlights will list an IP rating in accordance with IEC 60529. For above-grade applications, short spray of rain and water jets-from almost any angle-Will be captured by IP65 lenses. For ground-recessed applications subject to occasional puddling, higher rating IP67 will provide the required protection.

What is the best wattage for outdoor spotlights?

Selection of wattage should be proportional to the size and scatter of the illuminated object. Very small ornamental specimens in gardens, illuminating leaves and borders will have sufficient illumination from as little as 3 to 10 Watts of power. Larger shrubbery will require near 15 to 30 Watts, with uplighting area-wide architectural elements from 50 to 250 Watts, depending on height of the object - check relevant graphic guides above for your intended application.

Where should I place outdoor spotlights for maximum impact?

Placement tactics will depend on establishing the statement the illuminance must make. Lightening uptree foliage from anywhere between 15 and 30 degrees outward-from its base-can successfully reveal the form and structure of individual leaves-overcame shadows and illuminate the vast canopy. To eliminate the sharp contrast cast by single pinpoint illumination, place two fixtures at opposite street angles to highlight the object from its different sides, and eradicate the hard shadows. Mounting downlight fixtures high in the trees for moonlighting will established a dark sky, balanced by scattered natural simulates -diffused "moonbeam" illumination through the branches.

How often should I replace outdoor spotlights?

LED spotlights rated through use can expect 50,000 hours of operation, equating to roughly eleven years of operation averaging 12 hours per day. Do not expect the sudden failure of a halogen; expect the output intensity to dim gradually, and the lens to develop a yellow haze or for the gasket to loosen.

Why are my outdoor LED spotlights flickering?

4 most common faults: (1) the LED module is not receiving the proper voltage and current from the driver, (2) the circuit uses a non-LED rated dimmer, (3) a loose wire connection is intermittently making contact, or (4) the driver circuit has failed due to heat inside a badly ventilated housing. Always verify driver specifications first, then check every junction box for corroded or loose terminals. Replacing the driver with one you know is good is the quickest way to troubleshoot - if flickering ceases, the driver was to blame. If not, the dimmer or wiring are then examined. We carry suitable constant-current drivers for all GQ-SP series fittings and can give advice on the optimal installation.
