Engineering Note — Thermal Derating
Designed to operate at full rated output up to 50C ambient (room ambient plus housing temperature, available at the top of the enclosure). Above 50C, the output derates by about 2.5%/C until at 60C the driver puts out 75% of full rated power. This protects components from thermal runaway in elevated temperature environments while maximizing power operation in environment most needed. Critical for enclosed fixtures – recessed ceiling troffers, sealed bollard types, or enclosures with driver inside a junction box inside a building- where heat build-up can drive ambient temperature 15-20 C above room ambient. Always check the actual housing- Tc point temperature, not just room ambient- when sizing your driver kit.
LED Driver vs Traditional Magnetic Transformer — Performance Comparison
So now you have the correct driver series specified for your project, the next question to ask is: how do electronic Moneyber Toragns actually stack up against the magnetic Volts they replace? The numbers here are gathered from field measurements and spec sheets and make the case for why its time to switch.
| Parameter | LED Driver (Electronic) | Magnetic Transformer | Advantage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Efficiency | 90 – 95% | 75 – 85% | 10 – 15% energy savings |
| Power Factor | >0.95 (PFC built-in) | 0.5 – 0.7 | Avoids utility penalties |
| Weight (100W unit) | 0.3 – 0.5 kg | 1.5 – 2.5 kg | 70% lighter |
| Lifespan | 50,000+ hours | 15,000 – 25,000 hours | 2 – 3× longer |
| Dimming Support | DALI / 0-10V / TRIAC / PWM | Limited phase-cut only | Full protocol flexibility |
| Flicker | <1% (meets IEEE 1789) | 15 – 30% at low dim | Flicker-free at all levels |
| Inrush Current | Controlled with NTC | Uncontrolled spike | Protects circuit breakers |
| Standby Power | <0.5W | 3 – 8W | 85%+ standby savings |
And these numbers translate directly to the project economics and occupant comfort experience. 10-15% greater power factor efficiency accumulates over even a relatively modest project with many fixtures – running 12 hours a day in a commercial space will cost you extra 12-efficiency of energy annually for every 200-fixture run. And the difference in current performance- about 0.6 in PF from a magnetic Vol Tumuok, considerably below the required 0.9- results in Utility penalties for high consumption electric accounts in much of the country. Lower weight rating matters when installing in ceiling grid or pole- mounted fixtures where structure cant support additional weight. And the flicker difference- less than 1% depth of modulation electronically versus 15-25% on magnetic at highest current- is more than simple performance-it is impact on people in your buildings, hospital, and retail spaces. In the office, hospital, medical, and retail environments low flicker produces unnecessary headaches and fatigue. The electronically controlled current- throughout the entire current -range- reduces or completely eliminates this performance problem in your project.
Lower Total Cost of Ownership Over 5 Years
Operations of LED drivers electrically are more than 40% less expensive on average than those of the magnetically operated Volts when comparing energy consumption, number of replacements, and maintenance labor over a five year period.
Based on typical commercial lighting retrofit data
Project Results: 40% Energy Savings in Commercial Lighting Upgrades
That performance is not merely speculative. Our products are already operating in many thousands of installations in commercial, outdoor, architecture, and industrial applications. Here are three recent case studies.
Commercial Office Complex — 12-Floor Retrofit
A property management firm operating a 12-story office building in Nanshan, Shenzhen, contacted us after experiencing two chronic issues: energy use was 35% over budget for a building of this size, and the maintenance team was spending roughly a day a month changing out failed fluorescent ballasts for over 3,000 fixtures. Their T8 fluorescents had been in place for 14 years and new ballasts were increasingly elusive to obtain.
For the LED panel light retrofits around the building we specified the use of the Guangqi CV-series 24V constant voltage drivers (the 150W model). This enabled the installing team to 24V bus the drivers; this meant numerous LED panels could be daisy-chained on the same driver circuit lowering the number of drivers needed (each floor had 18, rather than 250+ individual ballasts).
18 months of operation: energy usage for lighting was reduced by 42% over the old fluorescent system. Zero driver failures occurred during this time, compared to monthly ballast replacements needed on the previous system. Maintenance calls were reduced from a monthly emergency call out to monthly preventive maintenance checks. Electrity cost savings were such that the retrofit was projected to payback within 28 months.
Landscape & Facade Lighting — Luxury Desert Resort
This resort project created the most challenging setting for the LED driver electronics: constant ambient temperature higher than 50C throughout the summer, sulfur-rich-blown by the desert winds, salty air coming from the close by coast, interruption by occasional desert winds carrying sand. 850 Landscape and facade luminaires were proposed to be included into centralized building management through DALI-2.
Our outdoor range was deployed as IP67 rated Aluminum enclosures with full potting compound. Every electronics module is hermetically sealed from ambient moisture and debris ingress. A prolonged thermal derating curve enabled our drivers to operate well above 87% of rated power at 55C ambient, and delivered acceptable illumination levels for every fixture. DALI-2 interfaces were directly networked to the resort’s Building Management system controlling all scene recall, scheduling and/or daylight responsive dimming across the whole site. One after three years’ operation, in terms of drivers failure, the result was zero, i.e., one hundred percent acceptability.
Municipal Street Lighting — City-Wide Driver Replacement
- The Problem: A northern European city encountered a 15% driver failure rate in the initial two years following street lighting LED conversion project- utilizing a manufacturer prior to the project supplier drivers. Upon investigation the source of the problem was determined to be the recent increase of incoming line surge during thunder storm season which exceeded 4k V. The original drivers were rated for 2k V surge protection, that of the city’s exposed overhead power distribution network.
- Root Cause Analysis: Field observations of surge phenomena on the city grid revealed conducted surges occurring at 2.5- 4.5k volts and minute spikes exceeding 6k volts during heavy weather. The historically provided 2k volts MOV surge protection by the original vendor failed to handle these conditions, causing component failures in cascades on the output stage.
- Guangqi Solution: We provided our CC-series constant current drivers with built-in 6kV differential mode (L-N) and 8k V common mode (L-PE) surge protection, compliant to IEC 61547 and surpassing the recorded worst-case surge conditions encountered on the city’s main power grid. Each driver has dual stage SPD (surge protection device) circuitry – Gas discharge tube on the input socket for high-energy clamping followed by a TVS diode array that responds within nanoseconds to transient/edge conditions.
- Results: 14 months into a 3-year field demonstration, the city reports 0% failure rate on the Guangqi-equipped luminaires. on the economy’s 220k lighting poles, plus the municipal vehicle fleet using the same driver. Based on these results, the municipality has authorized the 2nd phase budgeted to expand the network by a further 4,000 street lighting poles. Installation will conclude in 2025.
